As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.

When we compared Space Center Intermediate, which is a part of CLEAR CREEK ISD, with Miller Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.

Space Center Intermediate’s regular student population is 785 with a 13.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Miller Intermediate is 780 students and a 13.4 students/teacher ratio.

Performance Indicators

Space Center Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

On the other hand, Miller Intermediate performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 80 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 91 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.

Distinction Designations

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.

It is in this area where the two schools differ. Space Center Intermediate’s two out of seven distinctions are in Social Studies and post-secondary. Miller Intermediate's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.

Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Space Center Intermediate. They make up for 45.86% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.14%), African Americans (8.28%), Asians (6.24%), Two or More Races (5.22%) and Native Americans (0.25%).

At Miller Intermediate, Hispanics make up 90.26% of student population, followed by African Americans (5.90%), Whites or Caucasians (3.46%), Asians (0.26%) and Two or More Races (0.13%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.

Based on household incomes, the Space Center Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 53.38% compared to 86.03% at Miller Intermediate.

In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Space Center Intermediate has 219 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 27.90% of student population. Miller Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 417 or about 53.46% of student population.

In addition, Space Center Intermediate has 27.52% bilingual students, 3.06% are in the gifted and talented program, while 19.11% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Miller Intermediate with 57.69% bilingual students, 15.13% gifted and talented students and 12.82% students in the special education program.
