A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.

It is in this area where the two schools differ. Mcmillen High School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies. Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Mcmillen High School. They make up for 30.40% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (29.50%), Asians (21.78%), African Americans (13.17%), Two or More Races (4.85%) and Native Americans (0.20%).

The student population at Plano East Sr High School is also predominantly by Asians at 32.59%, followed by Hispanics (30.41%), Whites or Caucasians (21.44%), African Americans (10.82%), Two or More Races (4.35%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
