Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.

When we compared Stinson Middle School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, with Rogers Academy, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.

Stinson Middle School’s regular student population is 897 with a 16.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Rogers Academy is 754 students and a 15.1 students/teacher ratio.

Performance Indicators

Stinson Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 81 in student achievement, 76 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 80 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

On the other hand, Rogers Academy was stamped a State accountability rating of F. The school posted 54 in student achievement, 58 in school progress, 69 in closing performance gaps and 59 overall in post-secondary readiness.

At Rogers Academy, Hispanics make up 95.36% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (1.99%), African Americans (1.72%), Two or More Races (0.66%) and Asians (0.27%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.

Based on household incomes, the Stinson Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 40.80% compared to 93.24% at Rogers Academy.

Stinson Middle School's 55 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 12 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.8 years. Teachers at Rogers Academy, numbering 49 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years.

Of its teaching staff, Stinson Middle School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 14 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 20 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
