Leadership Is A Team Sport

As I tuned in to Sunday Football this week, I couldn't help but notice the broadcasters referring to the quarterbacks as the leaders of the team when discussing the various player roles. It brought to mind a quote attributed to Bud Grant, who once humorously stated, "A successful football coach needs a patient wife, a loyal dog, and a great quarterback, though not necessarily in that particular order."
When a team achieves victory, it's a testament to the collective effort, with every member performing at their absolute best. Conversely, in times of defeat, it's all too common for both the coach and the quarterback to shoulder the blame, with their leadership abilities questioned. However, the true dynamics of leadership in a team are far more intricate. The leaders, particularly the quarterback, understand that they must face the criticism, but it is rarely the whole story.

I see this in businesses and families as well. Great leaders approach their roles with a humility that allows them to seek out individuals who excel in areas where they may fall short. As a leader myself, I try to make sure that I'm not the smartest tool in the shed regarding areas that are not my expertise. I love it when the people who work for me have better ideas and better solutions than my own. It would be limiting to perceive this as a threat or to become defensive when confronted with alternative viewpoints.

The best leaders are not islands of brilliance; they are conductors of a symphony of talent. They recognize that true leadership is about harnessing the potential of those around them and creating a harmonious blend of diverse capabilities. By embracing this approach, leaders not only secure their own success but also elevate the entire team, making achievements that were once deemed impossible, possible. The path to extraordinary leadership lies in the belief that it takes a village, a darn good one.

As its name implies, the restaurant’s raw bar section starts with oysters from the East and West Coasts and continues with caviar, crudo, ceviche, shrimp cocktail, and seafood towers.
