LEED buildings utilize native, drought resistant plants in their landscaping. What are some shrubs, grasses, and trees that are both native to the Houston area and are drought resistant?

Hi Jonathon, that is a great question considering we experience drought from time to time here in Houston. Landscaping is a good investment for properties, so wise decisions when planting are important.

The Native Plant Society of Texas, Houston Chapter is a good resource for information. A link to their Facebook page is below. They provide a great handout in PDF form with lots of pertinent information about local landscaping. On page 15 of the second link below, you will find a list of drought tolerant native plants for Harris County.

You are probably familiar with several plants just by seeing them in our Houston area. One of the staple Houston trees is the Live Oak. Many Houston streets are beautifully lined by them. If you decide to plant a Live Oak though, be aware that there are lots of leaves dropping in the fall and spring as well as a lot of acorns. If you plant a Live Oak, squirrels will soon follow!

An easy-to-grow and drought-tolerant shrub is Native Texas Lantana. It has orange or yellow flowers and spreads a lot if you allow it. Just watch out for the Lantana Camera variety it is considered an invasive plant for our area.

You may want to visit the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center on Woodway. It is a great resource. The volunteers there love to talk about plants and would be happy to answer any plant-related questions you have. A link is below.
