Clean and Declutter Your Home for Fall

We’re all aware of what “spring cleaning” means for homeowners, getting rid of things we don’t need, and generally giving our homes and yards a deep cleaning in preparation for warm outdoor weather. Despite how common this is, not many people appreciate the value of Fall cleaning as much as they should. It’s the perfect time to cut down on things that are cluttering our homes, just in time to make the house nice for holiday visitors.

Take a look in your closets to get started on your Fall cleaning project. You might expect to find several sets of matching bedsheets, as well as a section of lonely sheets that are either stained, torn, or don’t go with any of your bedspreads. If you haven’t used these sheets at any time in recent memory, it’s time to get rid of them. Throw them out, make rags out of them, or donate them if they’re in decent condition.

Following this, it’s a good idea to go through that basket of mismatched socks and make a last-ditch effort to pair a few of them. If you can’t find the match for these single pieces by now, there is no pair and there’s no point in keeping only one sock. Discard all of your mismatched socks after you’ve finished Fall cleaning.

Take time to go through the cabinets in your bathroom. Many of us have a habit of keeping nearly-empty or half-empty bottles of lotions, soaps, shampoos, and other items that we haven’t touched in months. If there isn’t enough product in the bottle to use reasonably, throw it away.

Finally, the Tupperware cabinet in your kitchen is a great place to finish. You might notice that you’ve accumulated either a whole bunch of lids with no container to match, or vice versa. Where the matches went, no one knows, but what we do know is that these pieces are no longer useful if they can’t contain anything. Get rid of the mismatched pieces and invest in a new set.

While Fall cleaning seems like a hassle at the time, once your home has gone through a deep cleaning, you’re going to feel a lot better about the idea of having guests over. Fall cleaning takes a lot of work that can only really be appreciated once it’s been finished. For more ideas on Fall cleaning projects, check out this article at Southern Living.
