Preparing Your Montgomery County Home for Fall

The first day of Fall is just a couple of weeks away and before the weather gets chilly, there’s several things you should examine around your home to ensure that it’s as ready for Fall weather as you are. A home maintenance routine is a good way to ensure a safe season and prevent any damage to your home when winter comes through. Consider these five home maintenance tips for your home before the leaves finish falling.

Store your patio furniture in your garage or any other clean, dry place before the cold weather arrives. Though Montgomery County doesn’t get nearly as much snow as other parts of the country, the county receives enough wind and rain throughout the fall and winter months to ruin outdoor furniture.

Check your crawlspaces, attics, or basements if you have them. It’s important to ensure that your doors and windows are sealed properly, as well as scanning for any holes or openings which should not be in your walls. A properly sealed home will stay warm as the temperature drops, as less warm air is escaping outside. Keeping your home properly sealed will also save you money in utilities, as well as greatly reduce the risk of wild animals making their way into the dark corners of your home.

Clear out the dusty heating unit in your home to avoid the risk of fire breaking out, and to keep your heater working in its best condition throughout the cold season. Significant dust can damage or clog your unit, so it’s important to examine it before use. Look at your air filter as well to determine whether replacement is needed. Maintaining your furnace will help prevent the smell of burning dust from permeating your home during your first use of the heater.

Examine your roof. This is one of the key factors in making sure your home is ready for Fall. Look for an intact roof with no missing or cracked shingles. If you want to put your mind at ease, consider hiring a roofing inspection company to double check the condition of your roof.
