Houston home sellers are facing more competition in early 2026, and preparation is everything. Active listings have surged – in December, the market had over 52,700 properties for sale, about 16.5% more than the year prior. Housing supply is up to 4.5 months (from roughly 4.0 months a year ago), meaning buyers have more choices. This means your home needs to stand out to attract offers.
Setting the right expectations is crucial. On average, Houston homes now take around 64 days to sell, up from 59 days a year earlier. Longer market times give buyers breathing room to shop around, and they will skip over listings that seem overpriced or don’t show well. Well-priced, well-presented homes are still selling, but instead of bidding wars on day one, you’re more likely to get one solid offer after a few weeks on the market.
Bottom line: Houston’s market is healthy but sellers now have to work for it. Invest time in staging and minor fixes, analyze recent comps with your REALTOR®, and be ready to price to market.
