Houston real estate agent, real estate broker, or Houston REALTOR, which would you rather work with?  What is the difference?  The Texas Real Estate Commission issues licenses to both real estate brokers and agents.  A REALTOR is a real estate agent or broker who is a member of the National Association of Realtors.

Texas requires all real estate agent applicants to take 150 classroom hours of core real estate courses and 60 classroom hours of related courses.  Texas agents are issued a real estate salesperson license upon successfully passing the Real Estate salesperson Exam.  All Texas real estate salespersons must find and work under the supervision of a licensed real estate broker in order to legally practice real estate in the State of Texas.  Texas requires all real estate brokers to have at least 4 years of experience working as a real estate salesperson and demonstrate that they have engaged in actual sales activity during this period.  Broker applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree or 630 classroom hours in related courses and must complete at least 270 classroom hours in core real estate courses.  The broker applicant must then pass a comprehensive real estate broker’s examination.

All Realtors are either agents or real estate brokers.  Not all agents or brokers are Realtors.  In order to become a REALTOR in Houston, a real estate agent or real estate broker must join the National Association of Realtors, the Texas Association of Realtors, and the Houston Association of Realtors.  Houston Realtors must complete continuing education, pay annual dues, and agree to abide by the National Association of Realtors Code of Ethics.
