Fall is finally starting to make itself felt around Houston, and this weekend's calendar reads like it. There's free jazz under the stars, Oktoberfest kicking off, a charity 5K that honors first responders, and pumpkins already open for the season. I keep four free weekend guides going — Houston, Katy, Cypress, and Spring & Tomball — and refresh them every Friday, so here's a taste of what caught my eye for September 19-20.

In Houston, Friday night is hard to beat. The Houston Jazz Festival lands at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park, free like everything at Miller — the NOLA Resistance Quintet carrying the New Orleans sound forward, paired with projected paintings by Texas artist John Alexander. Bring a blanket and claim a spot on the hill. If you'd rather make a weekend of it, the Houston Polish Harvest Festival in Spring Branch turns twenty this year — pierogi, kielbasa, folk dancers, and live polka, free to walk into Friday through Sunday.

Out in Katy, Central Green is the place to be Saturday night: the band 100 Proof plays live rock on the lawn from 7 to 9, free and open to the public. Pack a couple of lawn chairs and settle in.

Up in Cypress, Saturday morning brings the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk to John Paul Landing Park, raising money for first responders and military families — run it, walk it, or just cheer from the sidelines. And Dewberry Farm's Fall Festival is fully open out in Brookshire, so the pumpkin patch, corn maze, and hayrides are ready whenever the kids are.

Over in Tomball, Tomball Social Haus celebrates its first birthday Saturday with an all-day Oktoberfest kickoff starting at noon — German food, seasonal beer, and live music right in the heart of Old Town.

That's just the short version — each guide below has the full weekend, with times, addresses, and links, and I refresh all four every Friday so you're always looking at the weekend right in front of you. Getting out and enjoying where you live is one of the best ways to figure out which part of Houston fits you, and if wandering one of these areas ever has you picturing your own address there, that's a conversation I'm always glad to have — no pressure, no obligation.
