Three days instead of two this weekend, and Houston has stacked the calendar accordingly. It's the last call on a handful of summer traditions, the first real Saturday of college football, and the final stretch of Houston Restaurant Weeks, which wraps Monday. It's still warm out there, so the August plan holds: outdoor things early or after dark, something air-conditioned in the middle of the day. Here's what caught my eye.
In town, Friday night at Miller Outdoor Theatre is the one I'd circle. WindSync opens with pianist Jon Kimura Parker on Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, then Musiqa kicks off its 25th season pairing live chamber music with short films about the city. It's 8 p.m. in Hermann Park and, like everything at Miller, it costs nothing but a blanket and a cooler. Saturday morning the Houston Cougars open their season against Oregon State at TDECU Stadium with an 11 a.m. kickoff, which means an early tailgate and home before the worst of the heat. If you'd rather stay cool, the Astros host the Diamondbacks all weekend at Daikin Park with the roof closed, and Jurassic Quest runs Friday through Monday at NRG Park.
Out in Katy, Central Green at LaCenterra has Ronnie Coleman Jr. & Merlot Music playing live jazz and soul on the lawn Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., free and open to everyone. And for families with young kids, the Labor Day Goatstravaganza at ROSE Therapeutic Farm in Brookshire runs 9 to 3 all three days, baby goats included.
In Cypress, Bridgeland hosts Katy Tompkins Friday night in week two of high school football, and Saturday from 10 to 2 The Union Kitchen at the Towne Lake Boardwalk is throwing a Dolly Parton tribute brunch. Rhinestones encouraged. The Boardwalk's September live music series also starts this weekend, Friday and Saturday evenings on the water, no cover.
Up in Tomball, Main Street Crossing has a big weekend: Grammy-winning Cajun band BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet on Friday at 8, then Atlanta Rhythm Section for two shows Saturday. Around the corner, 403 Eats has a free Motown night with the CC Rider Band Saturday from 7 to 10, and the Tomball Farmers Market runs its usual Saturday morning on Main Street.
