This is the last full weekend of summer before Labor Day, and Houston tends to send it off the way it does most things — a little loud, a little sweaty, and with more going on than any one weekend can hold. The heat is still parked in the high 90s with almost no rain, so the plan that's worked all month still holds: outdoor stuff after the sun drops, air conditioning at midday, and more water in the car than you think you'll need. Here's what caught my eye.
Downtown, the 7th Annual Mariachi Festival runs Friday through Sunday at the Wortham Theater Center — collegiate and high-school standouts sharing the stage with names like Mariachi Imperial de América, all indoors and cooled, with tickets starting around $19 and a 3 p.m. Sunday matinee that's easy to bring kids and grandparents to. If free is more your speed, Cirque-tacular: The Art of Circus plays Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park on Saturday at 8 — aerial acrobatics that hold a seven-year-old and a seventy-year-old equally still, and the hill is open seating, so a blanket and a cooler are all you need.
Out in The Woodlands, blues legend Buddy Guy headlines a stacked bill at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Saturday at 6, with Jimmie Vaughan and Christone "Kingfish" Ingram alongside him. Reserved seats run north of $150, so it's a splurge — but Guy has been winding down his touring, and there's a real chance this is the last time a bill like this rolls through.
Closer to home, the Cypress Melon & Berry Festival takes over the Fry Road farmers market Saturday from 10 to 3 — free to walk in, live music, and better than 5,000 pounds of fresh melons and berries. Go early, before the heat and the crowds both peak. Over in Katy, Central Green Park at LaCenterra closes out its summer programming Saturday evening with a free Bollywood Dance Night on the lawn — no experience required, just show up and follow along. And up in Tomball, Main Street Crossing has viral acoustic favorite Dave Fenley for a family-friendly Saturday matinee and an evening set, with a free Voodoo Punch concert and food trucks at 403 Eats that same night.
Getting out and enjoying where you live is one of the better ways to figure out which part of Houston actually fits you.
