Let's deal with the obvious first: we're looking at near 100 degrees all three days with almost no rain to break it up. That doesn't cancel anything — it just means the outdoor stuff is better after 7 p.m., the indoor stuff is better at noon, and you'll want more water in the car than you think. Plan around the sun and this is a genuinely good weekend. Here's what caught my eye.
In Houston proper, Santana and The Doobie Brothers play the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Friday night, and the lawn is the move on a night this warm — you get airflow instead of sitting boxed in under the roof. If free is more your speed, the Julia Ideson Building downtown turns 100 on Saturday with tours, 1920s exhibits, and crafts from noon to 4. It's one of the prettiest interiors in the city and most Houstonians have never set foot in it. The Summer Vibe Art Fair at Sawyer Yards runs both days with 80-plus makers and 300 working artist studios open alongside it — and air conditioning inside the buildings, which on Saturday afternoon is the whole argument.
Out in Katy, Rock the Block takes over the Historic Town Square Saturday at 7 p.m. with live music, arcade games, food trucks, and an entirely unapologetic '80s theme. Old Town parking tightens up fast, so leave the car a block out and walk in. Up in Cypress, the Boardwalk at Towne Lake has its usual live sets on the lakefront patios Friday and Saturday evenings, and the breeze off the water makes mid-August almost civil after dark.
In Tomball, Saturday morning has a rhythm worth keeping: free yoga at Depot Plaza at 8, then the farmers market at 9 with 65-plus vendors. Closer to 9 than to noon is the right call in this heat. And Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone plays three shows at Main Street Crossing across Saturday and Sunday, including a matinee if a late night isn't happening.
Getting out and enjoying where you live is one of the better ways to figure out which part of Houston actually fits you.
