STARTER HOME, DREAM HOME, OR BOTH? IT'S ALL ABOUT PERSPECTIVE - Tiffany Markovsky-Martinez

STARTER HOME, DREAM HOME, OR BOTH? IT'S ALL ABOUT PERSPECTIVE

If you’re starting to search for your first home, you’ve probably put together a wish list of finishes and features that make up your dream home. And you’ve probably set an affordable price point. If you’ve reached the stage of actually looking at available homes, you’ve also probably had a bit of a reality check about what you can get at the price you’re willing to pay. But, that doesn’t mean you need to settle on just any house, simply because you can’t afford everything on your list. Here are a few things to keep in mind to stay focused on finding your dream starter home.

Remind Yourself That it is a Starter Home

A starter home is called a starter home for a reason. Just because you don’t have an in-ground pool and game room in this home, it doesn’t mean that you won’t in your next home, or the home after that. Buying a home is one of, if not the biggest investment you’ll make in your life, but you’ll probably be buying bigger and better homes in the future. Look for the best you can afford now, and just imagine what the next step up from there will be!

Consider all of your options

There are alternatives to a 2 bedroom home in the suburbs. If your wish list includes having in-home amenities like a pool or home gym, but your budget doesn’t allow the space, consider a condo or townhome in a neighborhood with shared amenities. Or, if you’ve always dreamed of living in one neighborhood, but it’s just too cost prohibitive, look for a home within walking (or easy driving) distance, so you can still enjoy the area, without paying a premium.

Build The Foundation For Your Dream Home

Have your end-goal in mind when you start your home buying process. Is there a great school system you want your kids to attend someday, or just a part of town where you want to establish yourself? Find a starter home in that area and get involved, so that when you’re ready to move up, you have a smooth transition.
