It’s easy to fall under the spell of DIY home improvement shows. You can fix, update, or repair anything in only a day or two and save thousands of dollars by doing it yourself! They just make it look so easy… so achievable. And while TV outcomes can be inspiring, overestimating your abilities and underestimating the project can lead to expensive and disastrous results.
Let’s get real about some of the most common DIY myths before you start demo-ing…
1. DIY will save me a fortune!
True, you won’t be paying for labor costs. But you still have to pay for materials. And budget for unforeseen mess-ups. And don’t forget the value of your time. For people who try to power through projects only on the weekends, it’s easy for a seemingly simple 4-step renovation to take 3 months to complete. Not to mention the fact that the budgets set for most of those DIY home improvement shows are completely unrealistic — just because their team of experts can flip an entire house under budget in 8 weeks doesn’t mean that you can do it, too.
2. I can learn everything I need to know on the TV show.
So many DIY shows feature that one scene where a person in flip flops and goggles begins to excitedly weald a sledgehammer to take down some old ugly walls. Demolition and remodeling are huge undertakings that involve research and experience. They also require the wisdom to know when you’re out of your league and need expert help.
3. The pros never use painter’s tape — that’s for amateurs!
Nope. Yes, painting is easy. Want sharp, clean lines? Use the tape.
4. Clean-up is a breeze!
Renovations are messy. A giant dumpster on your front lawn will go a long way toward easing the pain, but you can’t throw everything in there. Many building materials, especially from older homes, contain hazardous materials that must be disposed of properly. Old drywall may recovered in lead paint. The flooring you ripped out may be filled with asbestos. Research what you’re working with and dispose of it properly or you could get fined (another chink in your project cost).
