The Craftsman style home was developed during the Arts & Crafts Movement.  Throughout this period, home styles moved towards simple, yet sophisticated design with an emphasis on handcrafted elements; traditional craftsmanship; an open floor plan; natural materials such as stone, brick, and wood; and airy, light-filled rooms that encourage interaction with the outdoors.

Characteristics of Craftsman Style Homes:

  • Low-pitched roof - front gabled, cross gabled, side gabled or hipped
  • Overhanging eaves with exposed beams
  • Decorative brackets (knee braces or corbels) under gables
  • 1-1 1/2 stories
  • Built-in cabinetry
  • Large fireplace
  • Dormers
  • Large, covered front porches with tapered or square columns
  • Double-hung windows - multi-pane on top and single-pane on bottom
  • Open floor plan
  • Hand-crafted stone or woodwork

In Houston, we see many examples of Craftsman style homes in the neighborhoods of Eastwood, Montrose, and The Heights.

Love that post- An authentic home with character and history beats any new home. Also I love the list you gave to show the distinction of what makes a home older
