Location Matters: How to Choose the Right Neighborhood for Long-Term Happiness

As you begin your search for a home, you’re probably thinking about how many bedrooms you need along with a general style of home you’re attracted to. Each of these essentials are important though living in the right neighborhood can boost your long-term happiness. Consider these location-driven factors as you decide which home is best for you and your lifestyle.

Commute to Work, School, Amenities, Shopping, Etc.

Feeling like it’s time to stock the kitchen cupboards or may a key ingredient for dinner is missing? With the grocery store nearby you can get what you need and still have dinner ready before it’s time to drop the children off at band practice. Determine the maximum distance you’re willing to travel to the places you frequently visit—work, school, the grocery store, shopping, restaurants, hair salon/barber, medical appointments, family, friends, etc. Perhaps you enjoy playing pickleball, golfing or swimming. Living in a community which includes these amenities could be the answer. Dog owner? Living near a dog park or walking trails means easy access to outdoor space for the four-legged members of your family. Manageable commute times reduce stress. Having amenities that are nearby removes excuses for not having enough time to enjoy all the activities you like.

Neighborhood Size & Appeal

Do you enjoy the cozy and comfortable feel when you get to know your neighbors or do you prefer a bit more space between properties? These are two things to consider when you’re considering the property’s lot size. You may prefer living on a cul de sac with less traffic where the teenagers could shoot some hoops with their friends or an avenue with quick access to main routes.

As you think about what is most appealing to you in various neighborhoods, consider what matches your lifestyle. Quiet evenings sitting on the front porch watching a sunset with a wave to a passing neighborhood walking their beagle or star-gazing across your property with only the starry night sky illuminating the acreage.

Neighborhood Vibe: Day through Night

Each community has its own rhythm which can vary during the day and night. It could be fairly quiet during the days and you’ll pass minimal people as you take a walk with your toddler. Or, if you are you looking for a neighborhood with other Moms who may be open to playdates at the nearby park, you may want to live in a community with young families. Perhaps you’re looking for a quiet community with fellow retirees who may share some common interests so you’re interested in living in a 55+ adult community.

Make plans to ride through the community you’re interested in during the daytime and during the evening to observe what you see, what you hear, and what the general vibe is like.

Property Taxes & Affordability

Ask your agent to assist you in determining the estimated property taxes for each home that’s caught your eye. As you review the numbers, you’ll be able to better determine which homes are affordable and will work within your budget. Don’t forget to inquire about projected resell value which could be helpful later on.
