Looking for places to beat the heat? Take the family to the Downtown Tunnels. Yes, I’m talking about Houston’s Downtown Tunnels, the area’s go-to shopping and dining experience contained in a system of tunnels 20 feet below Houston's Downtown streets and spanning more than six miles long (or 95 city blocks). Portions of the tunnel are home to restaurants and other dining establishments, gift shops, banks, newsstands, technology centers, flower shops, dry cleaners, hair salons, clothing boutiques, food courts and so much more. Access is available to the tunnels during weekday business hours. It’s a fantastic place to walk, shop, dine, and meet friends.
There are six main tunnel systems known as:
There are only two direct street access points to the tunnel system being located at Wells Fargo Plaza and McKinney Garage on Main Street. All other entry points can be found via street-level stairs, escalators, and elevators inside of private office buildings.
Each underground tunnel system is climate-controlled and has wide pedestrian walkways.
There are a handful of connections in the tunnel system constructed of skywalks. These skywalks can be found between the Hilton-Americas Hotel and George R. Brown Convention Center as well as at the Toyota Center and at the Houston Public Library.
The Harris County Tunnel located at the north side of Downtown is not connected to the rest of the tunnel system or skywalks. This tunnel spans 10 city blocks linking the Harris County courts, jail, and associated building.
The more than 150,000-persons downtown workforce and city visitors use the tunnel system daily. The usage number increases on days when it’s raining or temps top 100-degrees.
Most of the tunnel isn’t owned by the City of Houston but instead by individual building property owners who lease retail space to the tunnel occupants.
Because the tunnel tenants are independent, during holiday seasons you’ll notice varying holiday themes and décor in their respective sections. Some areas of have display window, artwork, and architectural features. These unique touches help shoppers and visitors tell when they are leaving one building for another by noticing the changes.
Tunnel security is maintained by building property owners and security guards are located at strategic locations throughout as well as the installation of security cameras ensures safety for all.
