4 Unique Things Couples Do Around Houston

As time is spent with prospective homebuyers it’s natural for our conversations to revolve around learning about the communities where the listed homes are located and what’s nearby. We talk about the commute to schools, shopping, restaurants and entertainment as well as this one common question I often hear:

“What are some things for couples to do around this area?”

While there’s nothing wrong with grabbing a coffee together or catching a movie, you may be looking for something more unique. The Houston metroplex can offer many options, I’ll share my top four activities.

Sara’s Top 4 Unique Things to Do

1. Take a Cooking Class

When you sign up for a cooking class, you will learn how to prepare a great quality meal, be introduced to extraordinary cooking ingredients, and possibly new-to-you tasting flavors plus participate in a social outing with others. Learning something new with another person is a great way to work together, learn about each other’s likes and dislikes, and do something creative.

Well Done Cooking Classes located at 8207B Long Point Rd., Houston, offers social/date night cooking classes that generally involve themes around “Three Course Dinner,” “Dinner Party,” or “Specialty Class.” These classes include three to four courses and are more social in nature—allowing you opportunities to get to know your date and/or your cooking partners while making and eating great food. You will work in groups of up to four people and cook everything on the menu, except sometimes dessert.

Urban Chef located at 3651 Wesleyan, Suite 204, Houston (in the Costco shopping center in the Greenway Plaza area) promises that in their three-hour class you can learn to cook and then sit down in the dining room to enjoy the deliciousness of your labor. Cooking students can choose from a variety of classes or even choose a Date Night Club Membership.

2. Join a Creative Arts Class

If the arts are more your creative style, consider joining a painting or pottery class.

Let’s begin with a painting class at Painting with a Twist located at 10001 Westheimer Rd., Suite 1110, Houston. Their motto is Sip. Socialize. Create. The team does an amazing job helping their art students have a good experience while they work on a painting to take home at the end of the class. Participants don’t need to have experience or be creative to have fun. If you want something with an added twist, check out one of the blacklight events where glow-in-the-dark paints are used.

Artist Catherine Gauche hosts collaborative painting classes. Be sure to follow her Facebook page to see examples of what’s under her paintbrush and schedule a class. What makes working with Catherine so special is these art pieces are collaborative paintings. It all begins with you painting an abstract background. It’s all about you—your colors, your brushstrokes, and embracing your own unique creativity. Next comes Catherine’s part, she will step in and add a detailed portrait over your masterpiece. But it’s not about what Catherine does, it’s about preserving this combination of what you’ve painted plus the portrait overlaid to design a perfect timeless keepsake.

As we head over to The Mad Potter for a pottery date, you’ll be going to one of their three Houston locations at 1963-A W. Gray Street or 6504 Del Monte Drive or 4882 Beechnut Street. Walk-ins are welcome. Pottery students will choose your pottery from 250 pottery pieces, get a paint tutorial to get you started, then you’re all set to begin. The staff will glaze and fire the pieces before you take them home in about five days.

3. Enjoy a Wine Tasting Event

Off the Vine Bistro located 4220 Cartwright Rd., Suite 701, Missouri City is all about slow unhurried ambience with good wines and some accompanying fine foods. Make plans to attend their monthly wine dinners and tastings, all at their location known as "701." Watch their website for the calendar of upcoming events.

When wine tasting is one of the activities you enjoy, you must experience one of the wine tasting events at The Texas Wine School. Located at 2301 Portsmouth Street, Houston, this school is all about wine education. Tasters can choose courses expanding on wine basics and best wine pairings or go deeper with learning about the various wine styles and qualities of wines. They even offer a variety of diploma classes for the serious wine student.

4. Try a Dining in the Dark Experience

Ever wondered what it is like to eat in the dark? Dining in the Dark is a gastronomical experience that invites you to explore the full potential of your taste buds in a uniquely entertaining atmosphere. While blindfolded, you’ll enjoy delectable surprise dishes and feast on a curated 3-course meal without using your sight, thereby enhancing your other senses.
