When you enjoy solving puzzles, a bit of mystery, all tossed in with some challenges plus loads of fun, you are someone who will get a kick out of experiencing an escape room. An escape room is a room in which people are locked in order to play a game requiring them to solve a series of puzzles within a certain amount of time to accomplish a goal, typically finding the key to unlock the room. These immersive experiences have been growing in popularity as well as vary in difficulty to solve.
While most escape room experiences take place in a physical building, mobile escape rooms are starting to show up so they can bring the fun to your location or set up at an event or festival.
The most common types of escape rooms include:
Linear: You must first find Clue #1 then move on to Clue #2, and keep searching for each clue in order. You can’t solve Clue #5 until the previous clues have been completed. The advantages to this type of room are the clues build on each other and make sense. This is perfect for smaller groups. The puzzles build on each other and the story develops as the clues are solved.
Non-Linear: This type of room has chaos built into the gameplay. 95% of the puzzles are solvable as soon as you walk into the room and there is the possibility of the puzzles being contained in two rooms where you must travel from room to room to work out clues and figure out your next move or what you need and when you need it. Teamwork will be critical and everyone will have something to do.
Mixed: This type of room is referring to a mixed virtual reality experience. Game players may work together from different rooms while parts of the game are hidden from some players. There could be a time limit. There could be secrets and clues shared with only a few team members. These experiences will put your creative problem-solving skills to the test while you unravel cryptic messages.
Scavenger Hunt: This form of escape is great for team-building or exploring a city. The mystery and game adventure can have teams racing around looking for clues or completing challenges while they get closer to solving the riddles. It’s not just checking things off a list or buzzing about town snapping photos. You may find yourself interacting with actors who are there to help…or mislead you down the wrong path.
The diehard escape room enthusiasts have often participated in each of these styles and will usually be drawn to one type as their favorite.
