Learning to Fall in Love with Your Home Again

When you first bought your home and moved in you were filled with excitement, ideas, and dreams of what this home could be for you and your family. Fast forward to present day and those feelings have faded. If this describes you, you may be falling out of love with your home. It happens but it doesn’t have to stay this way.

There are two approaches to ignite some of the warm fuzzy feelings you used to have—change it or sell it and relocate.

Making Changes Around Your Home

When your home has good bones but just doesn’t excite you any longer, this can lead to feelings of wanting to move to shake the negative feelings. But what if those negative feelings hop in the moving boxes with all your belongings and follow you to the next place?

The answer to shifting the negative feelings could lie in making some positive changes such as:

  • Treating yourself to some customized improvements or upgrades you’ve longed to enjoy. This can range from changing paint colors to new kitchen cabinetry or flooring. If you’re still considering that this home won’t be your forever home, before beginning the remodel contact your favorite local listing agent to discuss what buyers are looking for. This move allows you to make smart choices with the upgrades to boost your home’s value and get some return on these investments later on when the home is sold.
  • Look at your home with an eye towards color choices and a welcoming feel. This approach may include talking with an interior decorator to help you choose both functional and attractive pieces to accent and showcase existing furnishings. Moving key pieces of furniture to other rooms can open spaces and change the flow of room to allow better flow for gatherings of friends and family.
  • Find the positives. Your home may be located in the ideal location for the commute to work, to school, to church, and to local shopping and restaurants. Your home size could be perfect for your family’s needs and the season of life you’re in. All of these positives can outweigh making a move.

Relocating to a New-to-You Home

The reality is that not every home you live in during your lifetime will be your forever home. It’s natural to move from the home you grew up in as a child to your home as an independent adult.

Those attending college understand that after graduation and with their degree in hand, they are ready to step into the next chapter of their life which often includes living in a different place than where they crammed for exams.

As you move up the career ladder, this could include relocating to a new city and a new home.

As your needs shift and your family grows (or decreases after the children marry and move out), the size of your home is something many re-evaluate. Does a family of two really need four bedrooms and a large yard that requires a full-weekend to maintain? Perhaps not. This couple may welcome living in a townhouse that includes an HOA, gym facilities, and no lawn maintenance.

Relocation due to your changing needs is smart and can also be cost saving.

When you’re at place in life where you’re not feeling the same love for your home as you once did, give me a call. I’m here to help you fall in love with your home again. This could include pointing out ways to boost your home’s equity and add some customizations you didn’t think possible or visiting some current listings to see the options available in today’s market.
