When You're Hungry for Tacos Around Houston

When you’re craving yummy tacos and it’s not Tuesday, where do you go? You may have a community favorite or you’re feeling adventurous and ready to try a new place. Keep reading and I’ll share some fun taco facts plus share several local favorites for you to visit.

A Taco is an Ideal Meal Choice

Need a healthy travel-friendly meal for the kids on the way to an after-school practice? Think tacos. Being hand-sized and portable makes tacos an ideal non-messy meal choice for those on the go. Pick from a corn- or wheat-based tortilla filled with meat and fresh veggies. No utensils needed. No drippy sauces running down your fingers because everything’s neatly folded inside.

Tacos are a good choice for protein and fiber which isn’t too high in calories. Depending on which ingredients are used a taco can be a healthy and nutritious meal option.

The Difference Between Authentic American and Mexican Tacos

Whether you choose an authentic Mexican or an American version, hands-down all types of tacos are delicious.

Authentic Mexican tacos are soft shells made from corn tortillas containing no flour. You’ll notice the absence of cheese. The favorite toppings are fresh cilantro and diced onions. Typically, Mexican tacos are not spicy but if you want some heat, add homemade salsa to make them as spicy as you like. Stewed, grilled, fried or marinated meat is used inside each taco. The marinate may be made using cumin, oregano, paprika, lime, onions, and chilies.

The characteristics of an American taco include hard shells, topped with cheese, shredded lettuce, and diced tomatoes. American tacos are often topped with store-bought or jarred salsa. The meats most commonly used range from chicken or baked pork to an oven-broiled steak mixed with a store-bought taco seasoning.
