Why “Perfect” Can Feel So Out of Reach

Between social media, television shows, and Pinterest boards filled with stunning dream homes, it’s easy to develop expectations that don’t quite match reality. These platforms often highlight the most beautiful, expensive, or staged spaces—and not the everyday homes that actually fit most buyers’ lives and budgets.

Comparing your search to those picture-perfect images can lead to frustration, unrealistic demands, or feeling like nothing you see is good enough. Remember: those highlight reels are designed to inspire, not to set your personal standards.

Recognizing this can free you from chasing an impossible ideal—and help you focus on what truly matters: a home that works for you.

Being Frustrated Doesn’t Mean You’re Failing

The home search process can stir up all kinds of emotions. Excitement at the beginning can quickly turn into decision fatigue when the listings start to blend together. Especially in a competitive market, it’s easy to feel like you should “just settle.”

But here’s what I tell my clients: If you're pausing, hesitating, or walking away from homes that don’t feel right—it’s not because you’re too picky. It’s because you’re listening to your gut.

And that matters.

Here’s What to Do Instead of Settling

1. Re-evaluate your list.

If you’ve been searching for a while, it may be time to reassess. Your non-negotiables might still be valid, but maybe your “nice to haves” have started to feel like deal breakers. That’s a sign to revisit and re-prioritize.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this still aligned with the life I want to live?
  • Have my needs changed since I started my search?
  • Is there a feature I can compromise on without sacrificing comfort or joy?

2. Give yourself permission to take a breath.

You don’t have to rush. If nothing feels right, it’s okay to slow down. In fact, that pause can help you refocus—and reset your energy.

3. Remember: the “right” home is more than just features.

Some homes look perfect on paper but feel off in person. Others might not check every box but feel like home the moment you walk in. Pay attention to that feeling.

Real-Life Encouragement

I recently worked with a family who had a very realistic approach to their home search. They knew their budget was limited, and they weren’t asking for a dream home—just something solid in the right location. The one non-negotiable? Their kids' school. They had already moved schools several times while renting, and they were determined not to do that again.

Inventory was tight in that specific school zone, and after trying to explore other areas, nothing felt right. Instead of settling, we refocused. I tapped into my network and was able to find a home before it even hit the market. It wasn’t perfect. It isn’t forever. But it met their needs, honored their priorities, and gave them peace of mind. That’s what a “right fit” looks like.

You Deserve to Love Where You Live

Your home is the foundation of your daily life. It’s where you’ll make memories, rest, grow, and feel safe. Wanting it to be right doesn’t make you picky—it makes you wise.

If you’re feeling stuck or unsure, you don’t have to figure it out alone. I’m here to help you refocus, re-strategize, and stay grounded in what matters most to you.

Because when we stop chasing “perfect” and start looking for “right,” the entire process gets a whole lot lighter.
