So you’re under contract, and it’s time to start packing for your move! Don’t get overwhelmed by the task ahead. Use these tips to help get you and your stuff to your new place all in one piece:
- Empty closets and the attic of any items you don’t plan on taking with you. Easier to get rid of it now than unpack it later.
- Pack a box of essentials that you will need as soon as you get to the new house. Include a roll of toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, bottle water, snacks, and any important paperwork you may need. Keep the box with you or make sure it’s the last thing added to the truck.
- Schedule disconnect times for utilities about 7 days prior your move day. You don’t want to have to pay for electricity and cable that you won’t even be there to use!
- Register your change of address with the post office at usps.gov forms about 7 days prior to your move date. Update your forwarding address with all your bills as well, starting with credit card companies.
- Tape boxes with packing tape (not duct tape) as you pack. Don’t just fold the tops together or try to interlock them.
- Use smaller boxes for heavier items, especially books (those get weighty fast!)
