With summer on the horizon, Houston home owners start spending more time in the yard, hanging out, playing, and just having a good time. If you’re looking for a few simple ways to spruce up your yard and make it a better place for entertaining family and friends, take a look at these suggestions:

  1. “Raise” a Garden. In 2017, the amazing Cub Scouts I worked with needed a project for their woodworking badge, so we invited them over to help us put together a raised garden bed. In less than an hour, we had the cedar timbers measured, cut, and put together! Raised bed gardens are simple to create and easy to tend. See a great detailed tutorial here.
  2. Lighten Up. Low-voltage landscape lighting not only boosts nighttime curb appeal — it can be a great safety feature as well. Use it along the driveway and walkways or along trees, steps–anything that that needs to stand out.
  3. Play Outside. You don’t have to invest thousands of dollars in building a swimming pool to have a fun backyard. You can create your own competition arena for games like horseshoes, croquet, and bocce. Read a great tutorial on how to create these low-maintenance play zones here.
  4. Gather ‘Round the Fire. You can build an in-ground stone fire pit in just a few days! Kids can spend the summer roasting marshmallows and hotdogs for backyard camp-outs, and you can look forward to cooler evenings this fall with a glass of wine next to a cozy fire. Follow the step-by-step instructions here (or if it’s too overwhelming you can always purchased a manufactured fire pit — those are fun too).
