Houston gets battered by some HEAVY rainstorms. Hurricane-force winds can blow off shingles and send torrential precipitation pouring through ventilation pipes in the roof, even in a tightly built new home. Dealing with the effects of water damage from a storm can become a huge expense.

Here are three places to check your home after a rain storm to locate and clean up water before it becomes a problem:

  • The Attic. Insulation will absorb and hold rain water like a sponge, making it the perfect incubator for a future mold problem. It can alsocreate wood rot if left against the subfloor. Remove any wet insulation immediately and run a fan and dehumidifier for a few days before replacing it.
  • Walls. Wall sections below a drippy spot in the attic or under a leaky window are a prime target for water damage. Look for bubbling paint, peeling wallpaper, or any discolorations or stains. Once you’ve identified and repaired the source of the leak, cut out and replace damaged drywall, as well as any insulation inside the wall cavity (make sure that area is completely dry, as well).
  • Gutters and Downspouts. These nifty little gadgets are worth the investment. They direct rainwater away from the foundation of your home that would otherwise pool and seep into the concrete and create extensive foundation damage over time. After a heavy rainstorm, inspect the gutters and downspouts for twigs, leaves, and other debris that may have blown in. Run water through the gutters from your garden hose to check that everything is still flowing properly and that downspout openings are clear.

Take the time to inspect your home thoroughly after a rainstorm and prevent the damage caused by water intrusion. If you need more tips about what to parts of your home to inspect after a heavy rain, or if you know someone who’s thinking of buying or selling a home in the Houston area, give The Rhoades Team a call at (713) 515-3463, and we’ll be glad to help!
