Autumn in Houston is a little unpredictable — 80 degrees one day, 40 degrees the next (or sometimes just later that same day)! Most of our lawns will go dormant once the temperatures stay below 60 degrees and require far less care than they did during the summer. But if you don’t want end up with a brown yard next spring, your lawn needs a little attention now to help it through the winter.

Water. Continue to water your lawn, an inch or two a week. Early morning is the best time of day, allowing your lawn time to dry before nightfall and reducing the risk of disease.

Rake leaves. Grass needs sunlight so rake up fallen leaves. Add them to your compost bin or cut them up in a mulching mower and use as a natural fertilizer.

Aerate. Lots of summer foot traffic from outdoor play can pack down the soil, making it harder for water, oxygen, and nutrients to penetrate the grassroots. Use a walk-behind aerator or a garden fork to puncture the lawn, allowing air to flow and the soil to have better access to what it needs.

Overseed. After aerating, it’s time to overseed. Autumn is a great time to plant additional grass seed in areas where your yard looks a little bare. This makes your lawn thicker and strengthens it against various weeds that pop up over the cold season.

Yard maintenance is a year-round chore for home owners, but if you’re diligent you’ll have a healthy, beautiful lawn this spring without a lot of extra money and effort.
