6 Springtime Home Maintenance Tips
Regular home maintenance helps keep your home safe and healthy, maintains value, and saves money by reducing repair costs. Take a look at our check-list of springtime tasks to keep your home in great shape:
- Wash outside screens and windows. Built-up dust and dirt can plug weep holes in the window frame and make opening and closing windows more difficult. Giving windows and screens a good spring cleaning helps keep them operational, as well as sprucing up the exterior appearance of the home.
- Power wash driveways, decks, and patios. Time and bad weather gradually take their toll on these areas of your home. Pressure washing removes the build-up of dust, dirt, mildew, and other stains to give your home a fresh, clean look.
- Trim shrubs around A/C units. Overgrowth can obscure the flow of air. This causes the units to work harder, reducing the lifetime of the unit and increasing repair and replacement costs.
- Fertilize the lawn. Adding the right mixture of fertilizer to your lawn at the appropriate time can yield lush, green results for the entire summer. Take care not to over-fertilize, however, as this can cause chemical burns in your yard and create unattractive dead patches.
- Clean and condition your grill. Start the outdoor cooking season with a grill that’s free from burnt foods, dirt, and cooking fuels. Scrub the grates, clean ceramic heating coils, and ensure that any gas opening haven’t become clogged. Cleaning your barbecue pit also helps ensure even heating and cooking of food.
- Inspect HVAC systems. A well-maintained heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is critical to the comfort and health of your home. These systems also use a lot of electricity so a low energy bill depends on an efficient system. Having the system proactively inspected by a professional each spring is a good way to avoid expensive repairs and keep utility costs low.
Keeping your home well-maintained not only protects your family and lowers potential repair costs, but it can mean an even bigger pay off when you decide to sell!
