I kept hearing everyone say how long January felt and I couldn’t help but feel that it’s because it’s usually a month of dues and discipline. We make resolutions and work hard to try and stick to them, we start diets, work out routines, dry January, goal setting, business owners have tax deadlines, HOA & taxes, are due etc. How could the month not feel so long!? Yesterday I had a great conversation with a colleague about social media and business marketing. She joked that she learns everything on TikTok and how she finds herself referring to TikTok in conversations so much through out the day that should start saying she reads it in The New York Times instead to sound smarter. Funny enough, I woke up this Saturday February 1st to an email from The New York Times with an article I loved!
Melissa Kirsch wrote about setting monthly intentions instead of yearly resolutions, deciding what stays, what goes, what works, and what doesn’t. That hit home. Why wait a whole year to reassess? I’m starting now! Every month, I’ll evaluate what (and who) adds value and what needs to go.
This applies to everything, even real estate. Buyers and sellers often feel stuck. Credit issues, clutter, or just feeling overwhelmed can keep you from making a move. Instead of waiting for the perfect time ask yourself: What can I do this month to get closer to my goal?
The takeaway? Don’t wait. Reset monthly, not just once a year. For me, I will be re-accessing how I work out. In the past I’ve tried to workout everyday, why because I like to eat, but I would beat myself up if I didn’t causing me to now feel the dread when I try to go back. In the article Melissa refers to a prompt she read that asked, “what do you miss, that you don’t want back?”For me I miss the wonderful feeling of accomplishment after running 3 miles but I don’t miss the feeling of failure on the days that I didn’t. So this month I will work on balance starting back up to 3-4x a week! What’s something you can let go of or start fresh this month?
