Natural Weed Prevention for Your Montgomery County Landscaping

Weeds are an ongoing battle for homeowners. They’re unattractive, persistent, and they can spread like wildfire. It’s not unheard of for many of us to spend hours during the growing season working to get and keep the upper hand over weeds. It’s the nature of the beast when you have fertile soil.

There are a variety chemically-based weed killers you can use, but their toxic makeup is not only harmful to the environment over the long term, they can also harm pets and young children who play in the yard. The following are several pet and kid-safe ways to cut down on weeds on your Montgomery County property the natural way.

It’s best to begin with the task of pulling as many weeds as you can, focusing on getting them from the roots up. This is one of the safest ways to remove weeds and one of the most effective ways you can prevent them from coming back. If you’ve got a lot of weeds to deal with, this might take some time. Take care of as much as you can, and then use a natural remedy to help finish the job.

As an acetic acid, vinegar makes an excellent and safe weed killer, among many of its other household uses. Spraying some vinegar mixed with water will desiccate or dry out weeds without causing your pets or kids any harm. Be careful when using vinegar around plants you want to keep, though, as it has the same effect on vegetation regardless of whether it’s a weed or lovely garden flower. Be sure to spray only on the weeds you’re looking to eradicate.

Salt is another natural item readily available at home. It’s safe for pets and should also only be used around the weeds you want gone. This may take some planning to ensure you impact weeds only, but it will work better than many other highly toxic options. As salt will make the soil inhospitable, weeds will die off, and your pets and kids will still be able to safely play in the area.

Once your weeds are gone, the ultimate goal is to keep them from coming back. For a natural solution, consider using cornmeal. It won’t damage or kill your lawn, but it will keep new seeds from taking hold in the soil and germinating. Weeds are going to have a hard time growing back if the condition of the ground isn’t welcoming. Keep in mind where you want new plant growth to occur, as cornmeal will hinder any plant growth. Keep it out of newly planted gardens, but feel free to use it in established lawns and shrubs.

A beautiful lawn and garden can be achieved with natural items while keeping your pets and kids safe to play in the yard.
