Houston and the nearby communities are heading into a sharp pattern change this weekend as a strong arctic front moves through. Temperatures will fall quickly, rain will increase, and parts of the region may see a mix of sleet or light snow depending on how the cold air and moisture overlap. Even though winter weather here is always unpredictable, the setup is cold enough that preparing ahead is a smart move.

What the Forecast Is Showing

Current outlooks for the Houston area point to a chilly, unsettled stretch:

  • Friday: Mild during the day, with rain increasing Friday night as the front approaches.

  • Saturday: A noticeably colder day. Expect widespread rain, and as temperatures drop, some areas could see sleet or a rain-snow mix. Freezing rain is most likely north and northwest of Houston, but the entire region should stay alert.

  • Saturday Night: Temperatures continue falling. If freezing air and lingering moisture overlap, bridges and overpasses could become slick.

  • Sunday: Cold and breezy with highs in the 30s. Light snow showers are possible early in the day. Overnight lows may dip into the 20s in some areas.

Even if the exact precipitation type shifts, the cold is certain and it will be the coldest stretch of the season so far.

Winterizing Tips for Houston Homes

Cold snaps here may be brief, but they can still cause damage. A few simple steps can make a big difference:

  • Cover or insulate outdoor pipes and hose bibs.

  • Allow indoor faucets to drip during the coldest hours.

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to help warm air reach the plumbing.

  • Bring in or cover sensitive plants.

  • Check weather stripping around doors and windows.

  • Clear gutters and downspouts so water can drain properly.

  • Know where your home’s main water shutoff valve is located.

Pet Safety

Cold weather hits pets harder than people realize, especially in a region where they aren’t used to it.

  • Bring pets indoors during the coldest hours.

  • Limit outdoor time for older pets, small breeds, and short-haired animals.

  • Provide warm bedding away from drafts.

  • Check paws for irritation after going outside.

  • If you care for outdoor cats, provide a dry, insulated shelter.

General Safety Tips

  • Avoid driving Saturday night into early Sunday if temperatures drop below freezing.

  • Keep phones and portable chargers fully charged.

  • Have flashlights and batteries on hand in case of brief outages.

  • Keep your gas tank at least half full.

  • Dress in layers if you need to be outside.

  • Check on elderly neighbors or anyone who may need help preparing.

A Quick Recap

We’re looking at a wet, cold weekend with the potential for some wintry weather in parts of the Houston area. The exact details may shift, but preparing your home, pets, and plans now will make the next few days much easier to handle.

Wishing everyone a safe and comfortable weekend. Hopefully the weather won’t be too harsh, and we’ll get through it just fine. Stay warm out there.
