According to a study but the National Association of Home Builders, althoughmost consumers prefer a single story home, home buyers in certain regions will face a more difficult time finding one.

The report draws from information from the census bureau. Nationally, more 2 story homes are built than 1 story homes, at about a 58% to 42% clip. The largest number of 2 story homes can be found in the northeastern region, partly due to the more expensive lot values and higher housing density.

In a report that was found to be skewed to a mostly older survey pool, 64% of homebuyersprefer a 1 story home. The study showed that 88% of seniors and 75% of baby boomers desire a 1story home. In contrast, only 49% of generation x and 35% of millennials prefer 1 story. The choice certainly splits along generational lines, which seems about right considering the amount of stair climbingin a 2 story home.
