House Hunting: Why Men and Women See Homes Completely Differently (And Why It's All Hilariously Okay)

If you’ve ever gone house hunting with a partner, you already know: Men and women do not see the same house. They may be standing in the same living room—same walls, same floors, same slightly suspicious stain on the carpet—but they’re having two totally different experiences. And honestly? It’s half the fun.

Let’s break it down.

Men: “Where’s the garage?” Men walk into a house and immediately transform into a Zillow version of Sherlock Holmes—but only when it comes to the garage. They check the garage size, the outlets, the storage, the “potential.” They glance at the kitchen from a distance like it’s a museum exhibit. And the top questions I get from the guys? “Have they moved out yet?” “Can we get a better price?” Bless them. Straight to the point.

Women: “Oooh the kitchen… and wait—what’s the story here?” Women, on the other hand, walk in with full HGTV energy. They head straight to the kitchen and the closets. They’re opening pantry doors, testing cabinet smoothness, imagining holiday meals. And let’s be honest—we are curious. Women want to know: Who lived here? Why did they paint this shade of beige? Why are they moving? Are they happy? Are we happy? Should the pantry be happy? It’s an entire journey.

Couples Together: Comedy Gold When I show homes to couples, it is honestly one of my favorite things. You can’t script this stuff. She’s dreaming up where the Christmas tree will go. He’s shaking garage rafters to see if they’ll hold a kayak. She’s measuring closet space. He’s checking for a beer fridge hookup. Both are fully convinced they’re being totally normal. And I get it—I’ve bought a few homes myself. My husband and I absolutely went through the “You look at what?!” phase, too.

Investors: A Whole Different World Now… investors? Completely. Different. Species. They walk in like they’re evaluating a business acquisition. Five minutes, tops. “Numbers work?” “Good bones?” “Rent comps?” “Okay next.” They’re efficient, focused, and zero-percent emotionally attached—which is exactly how they should be.

The Real Truth? You’re All Doing It Right. We all shop for homes differently. Some of us lead with feelings. Some lead with logic. Some lead with spreadsheets. Some lead with “Is there room for my tools?” And guess what? Every single one of those approaches is the right one. Because at the end of the day, you’re not just buying a house—you’re finding a place with a story. Your story. If you’re getting ready to buy or sell, I’d love to help you navigate your journey—garage evaluations, closet excitement, paint color mysteries and all.
