2020 has been a year of many changes! With Covid19 affecting business hours of many places, many new homeowners found it impossible to meet the criteria for filing for homestead exemption. A homestead exemption helps you save on taxes on your home. An exemption removes part of the value of your property from taxation and lowers your taxes. To file, you must have owned the home as of January 1st of the year you are applying and your driver's license needs to reflect the property address. Since Department of Motor Vehicles had limited in person access throughout 2020, it was hard for many to get the change of address update on their driver's license.
Good news! Harris County Appraisal District has removed the deadline for filing for your homestead exemption in 2020. You still have time, so get that driver's license updated and send in your application as soon as you can. You can still save on your 2020 property taxes by getting this exemption filed. Never too late to save you some money!!
