This is the year you have decided to replace that older energy hog refrigerator. There are deals on great Energy Star refrigerators almost every week in the local advertising flyers. Sears, Home Depot, Lowes; they all offer Energy Star appliances in a wide range of prices and designs. After shopping around did you decide that the model with the highest energy star rating on operation costs was the right decision for you? You might be anticipating a noticeable savings on your energy bill. Did that bill show an unexpected and maybe a significant increase?
Did you buy a refrigerator with auto water and ice maker? Ice makers and water dispensers can add to the yearly cost of operation according to houselogic.com. Don't forget that the ice maker and dispenser also require that you replace the filter annually. These are not over the top operation costs; but if you want to lower the utility bill; these are costs that are working against that goal.
There may be unintended consequences of re-purposing the old fridge to the garage for extra cold storage. Many home owners look at the obsolete model for additional space for food, soda, beer and ice. Now you are paying for two refrigerators! The one that is not so efficient, that has worn gaskets and is 10+ years old is out in the hottest area of your home, barring your attic space.
If you can really do without the extra refrigerator space, unplug that old unit and call a recycling company to come and pick it up. If you still really need that extra refrigerator space maybe it's time for two energy star fridges
