I bet the first thing most people learned about the use of household cleaning chemicals are that you never mix bleach with any product containing ammonia. Now more than ever the use of household chemicals are being called into question and one area that I have run across negative reactions to cleansers and the public is in showing homes. If you are ready to put your home up for sale, or you are already keeping your home spic and span for potential buyers you may want to consider the products you use for cleaning.
Buyers just do not like the smell of most common household cleaners when they walk into a home. One question that might be asked is; ‘What is this seller trying to cover up?’. Another reaction is just plain ‘YUCK!’ to the odor of household cleansers. Some folks cite allergies, or have concerns for children and pets. No matter the reason, if you are selling your home, you cannot afford a negative reaction from buyers. For years the common advice has been to use scented candles, potpourri or the smell of baked goods to help create a welcoming atmosphere before a showing. With all of the reasons cited above these is becoming less used. Remember the caution above; buyers can and do wonder what odors you might be covering up.
There are several websites that outline the most common ‘green’ products, some homemade and others available at the local grocery or big box store. If saving money appeals to you; go homemade. Just remember, every cleaner from homemade to manufactured; green or not requires elbow grease and there is just no way to get away from that fact. Fifteen minutes on the internet turned up more than enough info to get even a teenager, not schooled in the use of elbow grease, started with homemade cleaners. Houselogic has a great jumping off spot for homemade. Most of the local grocery and big box stores carry competitively priced, tried and true ‘green’ products with their own or nationally recognized labels.
