Tips to Winterize Your Home!

With freezing temperatures forecasted for our area this weekend, now is the time to prepare your home to avoid costly damage and unnecessary stress. A little preparation can go a long wayespecially here, where homes aren't always built for extended cold weather.

Whether you're a homeowner, renter, or planning to sell in the future, these simple winterization tips will help protect your property and give you peace of mind.

1. Protect Your Pipes (This Is the Big One!)

Frozen pipes can burst and cause major water damage. Take these steps now:

  • Cover exterior faucets with insulated faucet covers (available at most hardware stores).

  • Disconnect garden hoses and drain them before storing.

  • Insulate exposed pipes in garages, attics, or exterior walls.

  • Let faucets drip slightly overnight during the freezeespecially those on exterior walls.

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.

If you know where your main water shut-off valve is, double-check that it's accessiblejust in case.

2. Set Your Thermostat Strategically

  • Keep your thermostat set to at least 55F, even if you're leaving town.

  • Avoid turning the heat off completely during a freeze.

  • If you have a smart thermostat, ensure it's connected and functioning properly.

Consistent heat helps prevent pipes from freezing, especially overnight

3. Seal Drafts & Keep Warm Air In

Cold air sneaks in through small gaps more easily than you think.

  • Check windows and doors for drafts.

  • Use weather stripping or door sweeps where needed.

  • Close blinds or curtains at night to add an extra layer of insulation.

4. Prepare Your Outdoor Areas

  • Bring potted plants inside or cover them with a sheet or frost cloths.

  • Cover or protect outdoor furniture and grills.

  • Turn off and drain sprinkler systems if possible.

These steps help prevent damage and extend the life of your outdoor items.

5. Check Appliances & Safety Items

  • Make sure your fireplace and space heaters are used safely and according to manufacturer guidelines.

  • Replace batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

  • Never use ovens or grills to heat your home.

Safety firstespecially when heating systems are running more than usual.

6. If You're Leaving Town

If you'll be away during the freeze:

  • Ask a neighbor or friend to check on your home.

  • Shut off the main water supply if you feel comfortable doing so.

  • Leave cabinet doors open and the heat on.

A quick check could prevent a major issue while you're gone.

Final Thoughts

Freezing weather doesn't have to mean frozen pipes or emergency repairs. Taking a little time now can save you thousands laterand help keep your home safe, warm, and comfortable.
