Moving is very stressful for everyone involved so I have put together a few tips that might make the process a little easier on you and your family.
1. You cleaned out your closets before you listed your home to sell so now that it is time to move, it is time to do that again! Don’t pay to move clothing or household items that you do not need or use.
2. Time your move right. You probably didn’t know that you might be able to save money or have more mover choices by moving the middle of the month. Most closing dates are at the end or beginning of the month so think outside the box and plan a mid-month move.
3. Save on boxes by purchasing used or recycles boxes. You might want to start packing small items yourself to decrease the amount of time the movers will have to spend packing your household items. You may even be able to resell the boxes to the moving company when you are finished.
4. Take time to plan and organize your move. Buy colored tape and label the rooms so movers on the next end will know where to place the boxes once you arrive.
5. Take advantage of any tax breaks that you may qualify for. Don’t forget if you are moving a long distance you will be able to deduct many of your moving costs. Please check with the IRS guidelines and your tax professional.
6. Competitive shop at least 3 moving companies. You will want them to price the contents of your house along with the distance that you need to travel.
7. Research your mover. Make sure that you are hiring a legitimate mover, a licensed company equipped with the property insurance and resources to complete your move efficiently.
So next time you plan a move, take the time to do your research and select a reliable moving company whose reputation indicates that they can get the job done cost-effectively, efficiently and on time.
