Before You Move In

  1. Confirm Lease Details

    • Double-check lease start/end dates, rent amount, and due date

    • Review policies on pets, guests, maintenance, and renewals

    • Save a digital copy of your signed lease in your email or cloud

  2. Set Up Utilities

    • Electricity

    • Water/Sewer/Trash

    • Internet/Wi-Fi

    • Gas (if needed)

    • Cable/TV
Make sure utilities are activated by move-in day to avoid disruptions.

  3. Purchase Renters Insurance

    • Many landlords require it — and it protects your belongings in case of theft, fire, or damage.

    • It’s typically very affordable (around $10–20/month).

  4. Change of Address

  5. Schedule Movers or Reserve a Truck

    • Book early if you're moving on a weekend or during the end/beginning of the month.

On Move-In Day

  1. Do a Walk-Through & Document Everything

    • Take time-stamped photos and videos of each room, including floors, walls, appliances, windows, and outlets.

    • Note existing damage or wear-and-tear (scuffs, chipped paint, etc.)

    • Send the documentation to your landlord or property manager for your records.

  2. Test All Systems

    • Flip every light switch

    • Turn on all faucets and showers

    • Flush toilets

    • Check smoke detectors

    • Test appliances (oven, fridge, microwave, etc.)

  3. Collect Keys & Access Info

    • Front door keys, mailbox key, garage openers, gate codes, amenity access

    • Ask where to pick up packages and how to report maintenance issues

  4. Introduce Yourself (Optional but Nice!)

    • Say hi to your neighbors — friendly faces can make a big difference.

In Your First Week

  1. Clean Before Unpacking

  • Even if it looks clean, a quick wipe-down ensures a fresh start.

  1. Take Safety Precautions

  • Locate fire extinguishers and exits

  • Buy a small tool kit and flashlight

  • Add an emergency contact list to your fridge

  1. Decorate Within Lease Guidelines

  • Use removable hooks and damage-free adhesives

  • Confirm rules around painting or hanging items

  1. Set Reminders

  • Schedule rent payment reminders

  • Save landlord contact info in your phone

  • Mark your lease end date in your calendar

Bonus Tips

  • Keep a Folder for Rental Docs: Lease, receipts, repair requests, and photos should all be saved together.

  • Stay Proactive With Maintenance: Report issues early to prevent bigger problems later.

  • Know Your Rights: Understanding tenant laws in your state can help you navigate lease terms and protect your deposit.
