Concerts this Summer - Cindy Boyd

Concerts this Summer

Just about 30 miles north of Houston, in well known township, The Woodlands, sits one of our area's most iconic entertainment venues - the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.   The amphitheater seats 16,500 people in covered seating and lawn seating, and is equipped with an area to be used for dancing or moshing depending on the (very eclectic) musician or musical group performing.

The Pavilion, as it is commonly referred to, is the second-most heavily used amphitheater in the world.   The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion was originally built to be the summer home of the Houston Symphony and is currently running a program with shows including music from the Texas Music Festival Orchestra, a tribute to David Bowie, the movies scores of John Williams and special holiday events for Independence Day, Halloween and Christmas.

When it comes to musical talents, there is a show for everyone's taste his summer with performers ranging from Chris Brown on June 28th, The Pixies on June 29th, Chicago with REO Speedwagon on June 30th, Willie Nelson and friends in July 1st, and more than 20 other performers scheduled just this summer.

New rules include a change in bags allowed, those no longer allowed include large backpacks, camera cases, drawstring bags and large purses measuring more than 8.5 inches by 11 inches, as well as the addition of metal detectors at the entrances. While food is still permitted, no beverages of any kind are allowed to be brought inside. Small blankets and personal umbrellas are ok, but no lawn chairs or large umbrellas, canopies, shades or tents. Point and shoot cameras are ok, but no professional lenses. Weapons of any kind are prohibited as The Pavilion is privately owned.

Despite extensive damage to the structure (and a large portion of The Woodlands) during Hurricane Ike, the amphitheater stands strong and ready to entertain. For many Houstonians, musical memories have been made at The Pavilion and it seems opportunities are ample for many to come.
