More than ever, America is in love with dogs. While cats are still the most numerous, dogs are the number 1 pet recorded in American homes, and Houston’s canine hospitality is in abundance. Numerous dog parks around Houston are the perfect spot for canine companions to mingle. The dog park at Sergeant Goforth Park, near West Rd and Barker Cypress, has a beach entry pond for keeping cool and a dog wash in addition to a small agility course and picnic tables. The recently update Bill Archer Park in the Bear Creek area is huge and has a doggy splash area and shaded walks. Meyer Park, on Cypresswood near Steubner Airline, has long been a popular dog park due to its location and size.
All dog parks should have a double fence for leash area and separate area for large and small dogs. And it's not just Houston parks that are going to the dogs, several Houston restaurants have paid the fee to acquire a permit which allows canines on their patios. Welcomes have been long standing at Barnaby's, Cyclone Anaya's, Giacomo Cibo e Vino and Tila’s Restaurante & Bar. Newcomers to the list include the Heights Bier Garden and FM Kitchen. Most Beck's Prime locations allow dogs as well; as does Katz Deli in The Woodlands.

Remember that while traveling with your pup is charming and fun, it needs to be safe, too! Keep control of Fido unless you are inside the double fences of a dog play area. Keep your fur baby up to date on the right vaccines and prevention products as recommended by your veterinarian to keep them, other pets and yourself healthy. Watch the dogs communicate and remove your dog from situations where they are nervous or showing signs of stress to prevent bites or wounds and watch out for signs of overheating (which can happen even on 80 degree days) including lethargy, exercise intolerance and excessive panting. Most importantly is to keep you and your beloved best friend safe this summer. Have fun!
