It's February! - Cindy Boyd

It's February!

February is off with a BANG and there’s more to do in Houston than snuggle your sweetie! February started when Puxatony Phil saw his shadow, then the Eagles won Super Bowl LII hosted in Minneapolis over the Patriots. Pink sang the National Anthem barely recovered from illness and Justin Timberlake's halftime show was without incident (this time). Keep NBC on because the Winter Olympics start this week. Figure skating starts February 8th and the opening ceremony is on February 9th.

The Texas Home & Garden Show is February 9th-11th to inspire your Spring décor and landscaping. Now is the right time to start your garden indoors so you can transplant it in a month or so. Experts in various fields pertaining to remodeling, gardening or construction will be on hand with tips and tricks. Also show cased will be the newest innovations and inventions for the home. The event, held at NRG Center, is always family friendly. While you are at NRG, you can visit the Sport Collectors Show for autographs, memorabilia and collectables, or plan your cross country trek at the RV Show. Monster Jam is also bashing around at NRG February 10th-11th.

Also, the 107th Mardi Gras celebration is in full swing on Galveston Island with, hopefully, better weather this weekend as we get closer to actual Mardi Gras (also called Fat Tuesday or Pancake Day) which happens this year on February 13th. If Galveston isn’t for you, try the Mardi Gras  Ball at Saint Arnold’s brewery on Saturday February 10th. Tickets are on sale at their website. February 14th is not only Valentine’s Day (or the becoming popular Galentine's Day) but also Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.

Chinese New Year is on February 16th and starts the year of the Dog – specifically the Earth Dog. If you are a Dog, this year promises challenges and growth. The Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar and is celebrated by 20% of the world’s population.

As February closes, it will officially be Rodeo time in Houston and that will two step us right into March.
