Fall for Houston - Cindy Boyd

Fall for Houston

It’s Fall y’all! And it might start feeling like it soon (or at least we hope it will)! Autumn is the perfect time to take in the sights and sounds of Houston. Thanks to our diverse multicultural population there’s a lot of choices.

Starting Thursday, October 12th is the 30th annual Festa Italiana. During this event, which lasts all weekend and takes place at St. Thomas University, you can channel your inner Italian while grape stomping or enjoy beer and wine tastings, food, live music and art. Event proceeds will support the ICCC, its Italian language school, the Houston Food Bank, and provide funding for scholarships.

Saturday and Sunday from 10AM-6PM you can spy over 300 artists on display at The Bayou City Art Festival. Now in the 49th year, this show features different mediums and disciplines, including clay, glass, metal, leather, wood, mixed media, and photography. There will also be live music, kids entertainment and bites from food trucks and vendors.

Entertain the kids and support endangered animal conservation at the Houston Zoo during the Zoo Boo. Attractions include a pumpkin patch with a mini pumpkin to take home, candy stations, hand stamp stations, carnival style games, and costume parade. New this year are Zoovie Nights – late admission Friday October 13th and 21st includes viewing a Halloween theme movie.

Just north of Houston is the Tomball Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch. The 5 acre maze is near SH249 and SH2920 on Lutheran Church Rd. Many puzzles and games are located within the maze at this family friendly destination. The maze is the work of Salem Student Ministry and proceeds go to support the local schools and mission work. Additional attractions include Hayrides (available at limited times), other fun backyard games, and of course concession style food is available.

Looking for something a little scary? The Houston / Galveston area is reportedly one of the most haunted areas of the USA. Some of the reported sites include The Rice Hotel, Battleship Texas, Glenwood Cemetery, Alley Theater and Hotel Galvez. Or you can stick to one of the many commercial haunted houses!
