On Feb 5th, 2017 Houston will host Super Bowl LI and the Atlanta Falcons will take on the New England Patriots to prove who’s Kin of American football. All eyes will be on Houston as the estimated 140,000 tourist arrive for the main event and millions tune in to watch.

Last week, our blog focused on how Houston has grown and expanded. Her humble roots started along the banks of Buffalo Bayou to what now covers over 8,000 square miles. This week we’ll look at how Houston’s lifestyle and culture has changed.

It has been long established that Houston is a huge energy city and Houston is also know as the home of NASA Mission Control with the memorable quote, “Houston, we have a problem.” But effort has been made to improve Houston’s tourist appeal and to remove what a New York Times article calls its’, “reputation as an urban dead zone after dark”. In the last decade Houston has vastly improved it’s green spaces, including the creation of Discovery Green – a green space that was once 2 parking lots, variety of restaurants and entertainment venues. The improvements actually started in the 1990’s after voters initiated building the light rail, a new sports arena and new green spaces. The improvements gained even more momentum after the last Super Bowl Houston hosted and where part of what lead to the decision for Houston to host Super Bowl LI.

Super Bowl prep began 2 years ago, with remodeling the George R Brown Convention Center and the opening of new hotels like the Marriot Marquis that will be headquarters for the N.F.L. during the big game. Afore mentioned Discovery Green will be the center of a 12 day Super Bowl related event called Super Bowl LIVE.

Houston stands to generate an estimated  $350 million thanks to the Super Bowl and the tourists it attracts. More information on Houston hosting Super Bowl  LI can be found on the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee website.
