Friday, November 11th, 2016 is Veterans Day. Originally call Armistice Day, November 11th marks the day the armistice was signed with Germany to end World War I in 1918. Armistice Day was meant to recognize those Allied troops who had served during World War I but after World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War it became a holiday to honor any soldiers who fought in foreign wars. In 1954, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day and now we honor all armed forces veterans.
Countries in Europe also celebrate and honor their veterans. Armistice Day is still celebrated in the United Kingdom where people wear poppies for remembrance and the celebrate Remembrance Day the Sunday after Armistice Day to honor the fallen. Throughout the UK there is a moment of silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (November 11th) to commemorate the signing of he armistice and end of WWI.
