After a winter storm, it's important to prioritize safety and ensure your home and surroundings are secure. Here are some tips to help you navigate the aftermath:

1. Stay Informed:

  • Listen to local news and weather updates for information on road conditions, closures, and any ongoing hazards.

2. Check for Safety:

  • Inspect your home for damage, such as roof issues, broken pipes, or downed power lines. If you suspect structural damage, contact professionals.
  • Be cautious of ice accumulation on roofs and gutters, which can lead to leaks or collapses.

3. Clear Snow and Ice:

  • Shovel driveways and walkways to prevent slips and falls. Use salt or sand to improve traction.
  • Clear snow away from vents, exhaust pipes, and hydrants to prevent dangerous blockages.

4. Driving:

  • Avoid driving until roads are cleared and safe. If you must drive, ensure your car is equipped with emergency supplies and drive slowly.
  • Keep a safe distance from snow plows and emergency vehicles.

5. Check Utilities:

  • If you lost power, check for updates from your utility company and use generators safely, outdoors and away from windows.
  • Check for frozen pipes. If you suspect a pipe is frozen, thaw it slowly to avoid bursting.

6. Assist Neighbors:

  • Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need assistance with snow removal or obtaining supplies.

7. Supplies and Provisions:

  • Restock emergency supplies, including food, water, medications, and batteries.
  • Ensure you have enough warm clothing and blankets in case of power outages.

8. Emergency Services:

  • Keep emergency contact numbers handy.
  • Report any downed power lines or gas leaks to the authorities immediately.

9. Pet Safety:

  • Ensure pets are safe indoors and have access to food and water.

10. Plan for the Future:

  • Evaluate your emergency preparedness plan and make improvements based on your experience with the storm.

Remember to pace yourself when shoveling snow or performing other physically demanding tasks, and take breaks as needed. Safety should always be your top priority.
