"I Live in Houston" -- What You Think vs. What It Actually Means

After almost 20 years as a Realtor and a native Houstonian, I’ve learned one thing: when I tell people I live in Houston, TX — they think they know what that means. But honestly, what they're picturing and what it actually means are usually two very different things.

So let’s break it down:

What people think:
Oh wow, you live downtown! Skyscrapers, traffic, rodeos, cowboys, oil & gas, and you probably know Beyoncé personally, right?

What it actually means:
I live 45 minutes from downtown (on a good day)— fun fact — Greater Houston is roughly the size of a small country. I don’t ride horses to work (but yes, I’ve been to the rodeo). I know of Beyoncé. And while traffic is still very much a sport here, you quickly learn the art of side streets, toll roads, and strategic podcast playlists.

What people think:
You must love the weather! It’s warm all the time!

What it actually means:
Yes, if you define "warm" as surface-of-the-sun hot with humidity that can ruin your hair before you make it to your car. It’s 97 degrees before breakfast and we consider anything under 70 "chilly." Also, our seasons are:

  • Summer

  • Almost Summer

  • Still Summer

  • February

What people think:
Houston real estate must be so affordable!

What it actually means:
Yes…and no. You can get a beautiful home for a fraction of what it would cost in New York or California. BUT — with no zoning, property taxes that require their own financial advisor, and a housing market that somehow feels both fast and unpredictable — it takes experience to navigate. (Insert: why having a Realtor who’s been doing this for almost 20 years matters.)

What people think:
You must eat Tex-Mex every day.

What it actually means:
Well, this one’s actually kind of true. Tacos are a food group. And yes, queso is appropriate at any hour.

What people think:
Hurricanes must be terrifying!

What it actually means:
Yes, we have hurricanes. But Houstonians stock up on bread, batteries, and wine, ride out the storm like pros, and then check on the neighbors. We’re built for this — but we still don’t mess around when it’s serious.

What people think:
It must be flat and ugly.

What it actually means:
While it's true we don't have mountains, you’ll find some of the most beautiful neighborhoods, lakes, parks, and bayous — and we make up for any missing hills with incredible communities, world-class food, and more culture than most people realize.

Bottom line:
When I say I live in Houston, it means I live in one of the most diverse, massive, ever-changing cities in the country. It means I know which streets flood, which neighborhoods are hidden gems, and that yes, I carry extra deodorant in my car during the summer because showing houses in July is a full-on workout.

Being a native Houstonian and a Realtor here for nearly two decades means I’ve seen this city grow, evolve, and somehow always stay true to itself. Houston may not be what everyone expects — but that’s exactly why I love it.

Thinking of making Houston home?
Let’s chat — I’ve got nearly 20 years of insider knowledge, a strong coffee habit, and I know where all the best tacos are. ?
