We all love our pets like family, and if you’re anything like me, you want to make sure they have a safe, comfortable space in (and outside) your home. Whether you’re buying something new or plan on upgrading your current home, there are lots of ways to keep your fur babies happy. Here’s a list of my favorite pet-friendly home features.

1. Pet Washing Station

This one is a game changer! A built-in pet washing station in the mudroom, laundry room, or garage makes bath time so much easier. No more dragging muddy paws through the house or clogging your tub with fur. These are especially great for big dogs—or any dog who loves to roll in the dirt. It’s convenient, easy to clean, and much better on your back!

2. Designated Pet Zone or Mudroom

Having a spot in the house just for your pet’s things is something I didn’t know I needed until I had it. A designated pet zone or mudroom with built-in storage keeps everything organized—food, leashes, treats, toys, grooming supplies—it all has a home. It’s even better when it’s near the door so you can clean up dirty paws and grab the leash on your way out.

3. Built-In Gates

Built-in gates are one of my favorite smart home upgrades. Instead of dealing with those clunky plastic baby gates, you can have custom gates that blend in with your home and still do the job. Whether you want to keep pets out of certain rooms or safely contained when guests are over, these are a clean, stylish solution.

4. Cozy Nooks

Pets love their own little hideaway, and cozy nooks are perfect for that. Whether it’s a built-in under the stairs, a spot in the corner of the living room, or a cubby in your mudroom, having a dedicated space where your pet can relax and feel safe makes them feel right at home. Plus, it keeps pet beds from being in the middle of the floor!

5. Dog Run or Outdoor Space

If you’ve got a yard, setting up a fenced dog run or designated outdoor space makes a huge difference. It gives your pets freedom to play and get their energy out while keeping them safe and out of trouble. It doesn’t have to be fancy—just a clean, shaded space where they can run, sniff, and do their business.

6. Outdoor Water Feature

This one might sound a little fancy, but hear me out! A small outdoor fountain or water feature with clean, fresh water is something pets love—especially in the summer heat. It’s a nice touch that’s both functional and pretty, and your pets will definitely appreciate having fresh water while they play outside.

Bonus: Durable Flooring

Let’s be honest—pets can be rough on floors. That’s why durable, scratch-resistant, easy-to-clean flooring is a must. I love luxury vinyl plank because it holds up well to paws, accidents, and messes while still looking great. It’s one of those upgrades that makes life easier without sacrificing style.

Designing with Pets (and People) in Mind

Making your home pet-friendly doesn’t mean you have to give up on style or convenience. With a few thoughtful features, you can create a space that works for everyone—humans and pets included. If you’re on the hunt for a new place or thinking about renovations, these are some great features to keep in mind.

Got a favorite pet feature in your home? I’d love to hear about it!
