West U’s new Recreation Center (4120 Bellaire Blvd.) is a beautifully finished with natural stone, both inside and out. A quarter-mile, crushed-granite, walking or jogging path encircles the property, which includes youth athletic fields and a shaded play structure. Bike racks are available - for those who arrive on two wheels instead of four!
I find it simply impossible to walk through the building without seeing several friends and neighbors chatting in the comfy lounge areas. WiFi service is available throughout the facility. There are two racquetball or squash courts, a free-weight room, and a large, eighteen-station, cardio workout room (shown above).
Eight classrooms serve up a broad mix of programs for both adults and kids, including Jazzercise, Spanish, watercolor, gymnastics, yoga, and Pilates.
Information about membership, classes, and schedules can be found on the City’s website at www.westu.org. Or call the Rec Center front desk at 713-662-7420.
