Can Heirs Walk Away from a Reverse-Mortgage Home?

Sometimes, keeping or selling just isn’t feasible — and that’s okay.

Understanding the “Non-Recourse” Protection

A reverse mortgage is backed only by the home. If the value is lower than the balance, the lender can’t come after heirs for the difference.

Option: Deed-in-Lieu of Foreclosure

If you choose not to sell, you can sign the home back to the lender. This avoids the public record of a foreclosure and can speed up estate closure.

When It Makes Sense

  • The home is in disrepair.

  • There’s no equity.

  • The family can’t maintain or insure it.

If you’re ready to move on without damage to your credit or stress, I can help you complete a smooth deed-in-lieu process. Call or text me at 832-978-2372
